Google Stadia is a cloud-gaming-based service developed and published by Google in 2019. While the service has introduced ground-breaking ideas such as simply needing a controller to play and nothing more, the service is set to shut down in 2023.
Why is Stadia shutting down?
Google underlined that one of the critical reasons for "winding down" the Stadia service is that Stadia wasn't getting the traction that Google predicted. Google lost heavily to companies such as Microsoft who were still getting the mainstream for their home consoles at the time of Stadia's release. When Microsoft did eventually release a cloud-gaming-based streaming service the audience, already familiar with Xbox Gaming found Xbox Cloud Gaming to be more reliable, resulting in poor turnover revenues for Stadia.
When will Stadia cease operations?
Google has confirmed that Google Stadia will fully cease operations on January 18th 2023. All Stadia users who have purchased games or controllers from the service will be fully refunded with refunds set to occur in mid-January. Google Stadia is currently still running for current members to play their games until the service closes.
