Living a Legend: A Review of Minecraft's Latest Release

Announced on June 12th 2022, Minecraft Legends is the latest game from Mojang Studios. The game is a spin-off of the extremely popular game Minecraft and is set in the Minecraft world. While Legends is a spin-off to the world's most popular game, it never received very much attention and as of yet is receiving mixed ratings. So today I'm answering this question; "Is Minecraft Legends the next big thing or just Mojang's latest flop?"

Storyline

Minecraft Legends is set in the Minecraft universe in a Minecraft world. The developers have always labelled its story as a legend, meaning that the story will shift with each teller's version and may or may not have happened. The main storyline is one day in the peaceful overworld a strange portal is born and out comes the piglins. The piglins are quick to spread their bases and corruption throughout the overworld and are very soon in charge of certain areas. You, the player, are called by three spirits to help the overworld and stop the piglins corruption.

Gameplay - Campaign

After your tutorial, you are taken to the overworld where you are quickly sent to stop a piglin invasion of a village. After gathering wood and stone, you can build golem spawners. These spawners summon golems according to what type they are (eg. plank spawner summons plank golems) and can be placed down during battle or at your base. These golems can fight for you or attack buildings. Throughout the campaign, you will work to build up defences around villages, upgrade your base and unlock more golems. While the campaign is filled with great battles, upgrading and exploration, it can get repetitive quickly.

Gameplay - Versus Mode

Minecraft Legends also features a separate Versus Mode for you and your friends to play Orange Vs. Blue matches in games of up to eight players. The mechanics are very similar to the campaign with there still being resource gathering and the building of defences, golem spawners and upgrade machines. The main objective of this mode is to destroy your opponent's core by breaking through their defences and using golems to topple it. This game mode is not attached to your campaign, though it still includes the piglins as an NPC enemy that occasionally comes to your base to wreak havoc and can be killed for extra resources. While this mode is extremely fun and I even consider it better than the campaign, it is quite long and drawn out, especially since building a Carpenters Hut can restore your core's health.

Marketplace - A return to MineCoins

Like Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons before it, Minecraft Legends features a store called the marketplace where you can buy new skins and myth packs. Unlike Minecraft Dungeons, however, this marketplace returns to using the in-game currency MineCoins instead of real money. This means that instead of spending even more money in the marketplace, you can instead use the MineCoins you already own from the main game, allowing you to spend the same currency across different Minecraft games.

Overview

Minecraft Legends is a game that has a lot of potential. I see that with the campaign style and the unique multiplayer format. There are only a few issues that stand out to me. The issues are that the campaign gets slightly repetitive after a while and also the length of time that the multiplayer games take due to the overpowered Carpenters Huts. Minecraft Legends is a very fun game overall though and gets

9/10 🎮.
